West Yorkshire Playhouse was our UK partner for our Culture 2000 funded Janus project. We are also collaborating with them through Hydroponic towards a 2008 co-production of Tajinder Singh Hayer's Mela, folowing 2007's co-production of David Hermanstein's Safe as part of Northern Exposure. We also are working with them as part of the Yorkshire Theatre Writing Network. Finally, WYP remain a long term partner in our European network, The Fence.

West Yorkshire Playhouse provides a range of opportunities for playwrights including courses, attachments, development grants, commissions and opportunities for adaptation, translation and international work. Literary Manager Alex Chisholm also oversees the Northern Exposure Festival at the theatre each year.

Development Grants

Writers are selected to receive a development grant from scriptreading, courses or other programmes. The development grant will be granted to develop an idea or an early draft to the next stage.

These development grants are between £500 and £1500 depending on the amount of work necessary. If they like the resulting script, they may offer you a further development grant to take it to the next stage.

New Projects
They have just embarked on a new project working creatively with parents and their babies. Through Whole New Worlds we will be linking with a range of settings and organisations including Surestarts, Women's Prisons, Women's Aid, Early Years Centres and Private Day Nurseries.

WYP also offers a script-reading service. They will not read every script they receive, though (past the first 10 pages). For more information, see their website.

Writers in Residence

Supported by BBC Northern Exposure, young writers will be on attachment for 6 months at the Playhouse, working on the first draft of a new play and participating in new writing activities including the Northern Exposure New Play Festival.

For more information, see their website http://www.wyplayhouse.com/
