We worked with Graeae on a mentoring scheme for Writer/Performers for 2007 - also in partnership with Apples and Snakes, as part of our Turning Heads Into Tales programme.
This was the 4th project we have collaborated on over the last 7-8 years to address the lack of professionally qualified disabled writers for the stage.
The projects have included the Disabled Writers Mentoring Scheme (1999-2000), disPlay4 (2001-02), and Lemonia (April 2003).
So far the work has resulted in one produced commission (Peter Wolf's Into the Mystic) and another commission produced by Soho Theatre (Kerry Hood's Meeting Myself Coming Back)
Graeae is the UK's premier theatre company of actors with physical or sensory disabilities. Touring both nationally and internationally, their powerful theatrical productions address both historical and contemporary issues and the experiences of the disabled community.
Graeae also runs a forum theatre programme, residencies, workshops and an extensive training programme in theatre skills for people with physical or sensory disabilities. Previous productions include: Two, by Jim Cartwright; The Fall of the House of Usher by Steven Berkoff; A Lovely Sunday from Crevecoeur, by Tennessee Williams; Into The Mystic, by Peter Wolf; The Changeling, adapted from Middleton & Rowley by Claire McIntyre and most recently Peeling by Kaite O'Reilly - dramaturg on the disPlay4 programme. Graeae's work challenges negative views of disability through active participation in the theatre.
