The Playwrights' Studio, Scotland is a new initiative designed to celebrate, promote and develop Scotland's rich and growing culture of writing for live performance. It aims to secure a future for playwrights and their work by improving and sustaining artistic quality, raising awareness, and increasing opportunities and access.

Playwright Tom McGrath initially developed the concept of a playwrights’ studio for Scotland. In 2001 the Scottish Arts Council appointed Faith Liddell to research the need for this organisation and after contacting over 66 playwrights and other theatre professionals unanimous support for a playwrights’ studio was confirmed. In response to these findings the SAC awarded funding and support to establish the Playwrights’ Studio, Scotland.

The Playwrights’ Studio is led by Creative Director, Julie Ellen with support from General Manager Claire Burkitt and an annually appointed team of Associate Playwrights. These have included David Greig, Liz Lochhead, Nicola McCartney, Peter Arnott, John Clifford and Chris Hannan.
